Student Activities
The Florida State Music Teachers Association sponsors both non-competitive and competitive events for music students in performance, composition, and overall musicianship.
Non-competitive events provide students an opportunity to receive an evaluation of their performance and musicianship skills where winning is not the total aim. Participation inspires students to become well-rounded musicians, to learn that interest in music is shared by peers, and to experience the reward of consistent, dedicated effort. Judging critiques benefit teachers by showing the effectiveness of their studio techniques and encouraging them to seek ways to develop a comprehensive music curriculum.
Competitive events provide opportunity for the development of excellence of musical performance and composition. Pianists, instrumentalists, and vocalists may compete both as soloists and in collaboration with fellow students. FSMTA provides high-profile performance venues to showcase competition winners in both performance and composition.
These programs also create awareness of the important function of the independent teacher and promotes professional interest in FSMTA and MTNA. Teachers who prepare students for these activities or who use the standards of these student activities as a guide are motivated to continually improve their teaching performance.
