FSMTA Byrd Piano Ensemble Award Competition
FSMTA, in an effort to encourage and develop piano ensemble playing, holds an annual competition for pre-college and college piano ensembles. This competition is held at State Competitive Events Day, and winners are selected from two categories: Pre-College and College. Each winning ensemble receives the Mrs. M.B. Byrd cash award, and other ensembles receive performance certificates. They may also perform in an appropriate concert determined by the Student Activities Chairman.
Eligibility: The two categories are: Pre-college (students who have not completed high school at the time the application is submitted) and College (ages 18-26, with contestant’s age to be determined as of June 1.) Students must either be residents of Florida State (Pre-college category) or attend a Florida College/University (College category).
Requirements: Piano duets or duo piano ensembles are the principal focus of this event. Contestants may perform repertoire for either idiom, or a combination of both. Repertoire should be selected from original literature. Ensembles should choose compositions of generally recognized musical standards. Transcriptions or arrangements can be used, but the focus of this event is on original literature. Composer transcriptions are considered the same as original material. Please contact the competition Chairman to discuss individual arrangements before submitting them. Photocopies of out-of-print editions may be used with written permission from the publisher. Memorization is not required. Pre-college entrants will be allowed a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 minutes performing time. College entrants will be allowed a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 20 minutes performing time. College winners may be asked to perform in the Winners Concert at the FSMTA State Conference in late October 2016 in Orlando, FL.
Rules Applicable to All FSMTA Student Competitions
Student Eligibility: Each ensemble must pay an application fee to enter competitive events. The application fee is $40 and should be paid by using the online PayPal button on the FSMTA Competitive Events page. Deadline for payment of Competition Fees is April 10th.
Teacher requirements: Teachers who are members of FSMTA pay no fee for their students to enter the competition. Non-member teachers are required to pay an $80 non-member teacher fee. FSMTA teachers who renewed their membership after October 1 will also be required to pay an $80 fee. This fee must be paid at the time of the application and should be paid by using the online PayPal button on the FSMTA Competitive Events page. Deadline for payment of Competition Fees is April 10th. This is a separate fee from the student application fee!
Competition Rules: At least one copy of the repertoire, unmarked except for measure numbers, shall be presented to the judges. All entrants must abide by the federal Copyright Law. Photocopies are strongly discouraged. Entrants using photocopies or PDFs downloaded from the Internet may be asked to complete the Music Release Form verifying that they have permission to use this music. Should a contestant have a bona fide reason for using a photocopy, he must notify the competition chairman in writing in advance of the competition.
Audio or video recording and photography of the competitions and winners concerts are strongly discouraged.
Three judges having no current connection with any student entered will audition students on performance. All decisions of the judges are final and will not be subject to further review. Judges have the right to declare no winner. One entrant in a competition category does not automatically guarantee a winner.
Questions or problems arising from competitions should be handled by the teacher of the student through the appropriate competition chairman. Parents are not allowed to contact any competition chairman or judge.
