Important:
- The FSMTA Marc J. & Kathryn S. Hebda Senior Piano Solo Competition is open to pianists between the ages of 16–19 as of June 1 of the competition year.
- Applicant must not have graduated or taken the GED. Applicant must be enrolled in a high school program in Florida at the time the application is submitted. Dual enrollment students are eligible.
- If questions arise, proof of age and enrollment may be necessary.
Application procedures:
- Submit a completed electronic Application Form found below by March 15th (11:59PM EDT).
- Application must be accompanied by a $40 application fee (and teacher’s fee, if applicable, see below). It should be paid by using the online payment button below the application form on the bottom of this webpage (select “Senior Piano Competition $40:00 USD”) by March 15th.
- Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
Teacher’s fee:
- Teachers who are members of FSMTA pay no fee for their students to enter the competition. Membership must be renewed before October 1st.
- Non-member teachers and teachers who renewed their membership after October 1st are required to pay an $80 non-member teacher fee. This fee must be paid at the time of the application and should be paid by using the online payment button below the application form on this webpage (select “Non-teacher member $80 USD”). Deadline for payment of Teacher’s Fees is March 15th.
Repertoire Requirements:
- Each contestant is required to perform a minimum of two memorized pieces from the standard solo piano repertoire, with a combined duration of 7 to 12 minutes. The program should include pieces from at least two distinct periods of music. Transcriptions and individual movements from multi-movement compositions, such as sonatas, are permissible.
- Repertoire must be listed accurately on the Application Form. Include title, number, key, opus, movements and duration of each piece.
- No changes are allowed after submitting an Application Form.
- Contestants are required to provide physical copies of their scores. All music must be published and copyrighted and will be checked at the registration desk. Names of students, teachers, and any other identifying marks must be removed from the music.
Awards:
- First prize, Second prize, and up to three Honorable Mentions will be given based on judges' discretion.
- The first-place winner will receive a cash prize from the Florida State Music Teachers Foundation.
- All participants will receive Certificates and feedback from the judges.
- Previous First Prize winners are not eligible to compete again.
General Rules:

- All application fees are non-refundable.
- Competitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses.
- The decisions made by the jury of the Competition are final and are not subject to query, review or appeal.
- Any competitor may be disqualified for failure to comply with the rules and procedures pertaining to the Competition.
- Competitors, teachers, parents are not permitted to contact or speak with any member of the jury at any time during the Competition.
- Entrants will abide by all copyright laws all music given to judges during the competition.
- FSTNA will be the sole arbiter of any allegation, and its decisions are final.
