Founded:
February
25, 1976; incorporated 1979.
Purpose:
The
Foundation was created in order that members or other interested
persons might have a place to which they could make donations, which
were tax exempt, which money would be used primarily to stimulate
musical interest among the people, the public, sponsor meetings and to
provide scholarships and support musical recitals and concerts.
Student Awards:
Each
year FSMTF presents awards to both student winners of FSMTA Competitive
Events and state winners of MTNA Competitions. A total of $2750 was
distributed to student winners during the 2004-2005 fiscal year.
Membership:
the
membership of FSMTF consists of the voting members of the FSMTA
Executive Board.
IRS status:
FSMTF
is classified as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, meaning that it is
a non-profit organization which may receive tax-deductible donations.
Relationship with the MTNA Foundation:
The MTNA Foundation and the FSMT Foundation are completely
complementary in that each serves unique functions. MTNA provides funding for many programs such as grants and
teacher awards as well as cash awards for students competing in MTNA
Competitions at the national level. The primary focus of FSMTF has been to provide cash awards to
students winning competitions at the state level.
Source of funding:
FSMTF
depends almost entirely on the contributions of members of FSMTA and
interested donors from the general public. Foundation galas are held as fund-raising events on the Thursday
evening at the outset of each FSMTA Conference.
Endowments:
Any account which has accrued at least $5000 is considered to
be eligible for a named endowment and will support an award of $250.
