  Michael Helvey

 


Junior String Winner

Michael Helvey is a 14 year old 9th grader who is being home schooled by his parents. His violin studies began 7 ˝ years ago with Betsy Wade Masterson at the age of 6. He then studied with Helen Kirklin and is now a violin student of Dr. Janna Lower. He has won numerous awards in violin including being the winner of the FSMTA District III and the State Junior Concerto Competition for strings in 2008. He was also the winner of the Betsy Schnell Youth Award under the category of Middle School Strings and the winner of the Virginia Clayton Summer Study Award in 2008. Michael enjoys chamber music and in 2009, he joined the Alba Trio as the violinist. The trio was invited to perform in the Marion County Chamber Society’s concert series, at the Stellar Recital sponsored by the Foundation for the Promotion of Music, and at Spotlight on Youth. Michael is also a member of the Alachua County Youth Orchestra. In addition to the violin, Michael has been studying the piano with Wanda Louie. He has received Honors in Student Day and was selected for the Student Day Honors Recital in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Michael has also participated in the FFMC State competition where he was the state winner in piano solo in 2008 and received honorable mention in piano solo in 2009.  In addition to music, Michael has many other interests.  He enjoys school, is an avid reader, loves to swim and is a cyclist.  It is his dream to pursue music in college.
