Young Artist Woodwind Winner
Nicole Roman is
currently an undergraduate student in her junior year at the University
of North Florida, studying Music Performance under the instruction of
Dr. Michael Bovenzi. Other instructors have included Dale Underwood,
Joseph Lulloff, Robert Raymond and jazz legend Bunky Green. She has also
performed in masterclasses for renowned teachers such as Debra
Richtmeyer, Griffin Campbell David Dees, Tamour Sullivan, Jan Berry
Baker, and Paul Nolen. Nicole has participated in the NASA Region 6
Conference, and world premiered a piece entitled “Gone…” by Michael
Taylor, written for saxophone and percussion. She has also premiered
works by composer Benjamin Brody.
A member of the University
of North Florida Wind Symphony, she is the principle saxophonist and
traveled with them to New York to perform in Alice Tully Hall in April
2011. She is also an active member of the University of North Florida
saxophone quartet and Orchestra, playing soprano, alto and tenor
saxophone. Other activities at the University have included jazz
ensembles, combos, athletic bands, the UNF woodwind trio, and other
small chamber groups. She was awarded the Most Outstanding Musician
Award for her freshman and sophomore year, from the University of North
Florida 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 Music Department and has also been on
the Dean's List every year. Ms. Roman is an active member in the Delta
Eta chapter of UNF’s professional music fraternity- Mu Phi Epsilon and
is the recording secretary.
Ms. Roman has been involved
in numerous competitions including the Ocala Symphony Orchestra Concerto
Competition, the Brevard Music Center Concerto Competition, the MTNA
Young Artist competition and the Yamaha Young Artist competition. Her
most recent achievement was winning the College Division of the
Northwest Florida Symphony Concerto Competition and will be performing
the Glazunov Concerto with them in February 2012 as well as
participating in the MTNA Young Artist competition, receiving alternate
for the state of Florida.
This summer Nicole was
chosen as the tenor saxophonist in the National Intercollegiate Band and
as 1 of 4 saxophonists at the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute for
2011, spending her summer studying under world-renowned saxophonist
Joseph Lulloff. She has performed with the Brevard Music Center Sinfonia
and Transylvania Band as principle saxophonist. She is also the alto
saxophonist with the Infinity Quartet and soprano saxophonist with
Shades of Purple. After her undergraduate studies, she will pursue a
Masters of Music in saxophone performance and instrumental conducting.
