  Michael Helvey

 



Senior String State Representative

 

Michael Helvey, a 15 year old 10th grader, is home schooled by his parents. His violin studies began with Betsy Wade Masterson at the age of 6. He later studied with Helen Kirklin and is currently a student of Dr. Janna Lower.  
 

He has won numerous awards on the violin including winner of the FSMTA District III Concerto Competition for strings in 2008, honorable mention in 2010, and winner in 2011. He was the winner of the FSMTA State Concerto Competition for strings in 2008 and 2011. He was also the winner of the Betsy Schnell Youth Award and the winner of the Virginia Clayton Summer Study Award in 2008. He was the Florida Junior Strings winner of the 2010 MTNA State Competition where he then went on to compete in the MTNA Southern Division Regional Competition in Columbus Georgia, receiving an honorable mention. Michael was the 2011 David Hubbell Concerto Competition winner which gave him the privilege of being the featured soloist at the Alachua County Youth Orchestra's Spring Concert. He has been invited to perform in many recitals including the FPM Stellar Student Recitals in 2009 and 2010.  
 

In addition to the violin, he is also a pianist who studies with Wanda Louie. He has participated and received Honors at Student Day in 2007-2009 and 2011 and was selected for the Student Day Honors Recital in 2007-2009.  Michael has also participated in the FFMC State Competition where he was named state winner in piano solo in 2008 and received honorable mention in piano solo in 2009.  
 

Michael enjoys chamber music and had many performances with the Alba Trio as the violinist, participated in quartets at summer camps, and is a member of the Alachua County Youth Orchestra.  
 

Besides his love and passion for music, he also has many other interests. He is an avid reader who thoroughly enjoys his classical studies, especially in the areas of history, literature, languages, philosophy, writing and poetry. He likes chess, enjoys being outdoors, is a cyclist, and is an active member of his church.
